Jinan in Brief
Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province on China's east coast, is located in the mid west of Shandong, it is the province's political, economic and cultural center. Jinan is at the juncture of the Beijing-Shanghai and Qingdao-Jinan railways. Nearby to the south is Mount Tai, officially recognized by the United Nations as part of the world's natural and cultural heritage. To the north is the Yellow River, which is called the "cradle of the Chinese nation." As Jinan boasts a number of natural springs amid picturesque scenery, it is known as the "City of Springs".
Jinan has a long history for about 2000 years, it is famed for numerous relics. It is the cradle of the Longshan Relics Culture, the reputed prehistoric culture of China and is found in Longshan Town of Jinan, hence the name. In the area of Jinan, you will find far more than you would expect, Baotu Spring, Daming Lake, thousand-Buddha Mountain, The square of Spring City and so on.
Jinan has been designated by the State Council as a famous historical and cultural city thanks to its long history. It is a hospitable city and tourists from all over the world come here. Marco Polo once visited Jinan and left words of praise to this city. The Baotu Spring, Daming Lake and the Thousand Buddha Mountain decorate Jinan as a Garden City.
Baotu Spring Park趵突泉
Beautiful Baotu Spring Park is located in the centre of Jinan City, and it is here that you will find the Baotu Spring. In the past, the Baotu Spring only covered 4 mu (about two thirds of an acre). The park itself was originally established in 1956 and more recently has been extended to 158 mu (about 26 acres). This highly valued facility represents the symbol of Jinan City and is regarded as one of the three major places of interest in Jinan. Baotu Spring Park is highly regarded as a well known scenic spot which makes an ideal location for admirers of wonderful natural springs, culture and various constructions.
What's more, the traditional and very popular Lantern Festival and Chrysanthemum Show are also held in Baotu Spring Park every year, which greatly highlights the cultural significance and importance of this beautiful and very impressive scenic spot. There's no doubt that visitor's will be struck with this very memorable place.
Daming Lake Park 大明湖
Located in the center of Jinan City, Daming Lake Park is regarded as one of the three must-see spots in Jinan (the others are Baotu Spring Park and Thousand-Buddha Mountain). The park is famous for Daming Lake (also known as the Lake of Great Light) which is a natural lake formed from many springs. Characteristically unique is its constant water level, unaffected by heavy rains or drought.
Daming Lake Park covers a total area of 860,000 square meters (about 212 acres) of which the lake itself comprises of 460,000 square meters (about 113 acres). The six islands in Daming Lake contain flowers, trees and other plants flourishing amongst the various pavilions. The lake is a center of activity and one can find fish leaping near yachts and boats. In summer, lotuses bloom uninhibitedly filling half of Daming Lake Park with its fragrant scent. At the same time, willows circle the lake on three sides and swing with the breeze, a scene for which Daming Lake is famous. The centerpiece of the lake is a great man-made hectometer fountain built in 1985. The fountain has 103 injectors, and the main injector can spout water as high as 100 meters (about 328 feet) in all its majesty.
Thousand-Buddha Mountain 千佛山
Lying 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) to the south of Jinan, Shandong Province, the Thousand-Buddha Mountain (Qianfo Shan) is one of the key points of interest in the city of Jinan. It is about 258 meters high (846 feet) ranging from east to west. It has been constructed into a park in 1959 which occupies an area of about 166 hectares (140 acres).
In the early days of Sui Dynasty (581-618) a great many statues of Buddha were chiseled on the rocks of the mountain and the Thousand-Buddha Temple was built and soon became famous, so the name of the temple was to become that of the mountain. There are many scenic spots and historical relics distributed in Thousand-Buddha Mountain. You can enjoy the beautiful sceneries all along the way wandering up either by foot or by bus.
Black Tiger Spring黑虎泉
Black Tiger Spring, also called Heihu Spring, is located by the south moat in Jinan, Shandong Province, east of Springs Plaza, and opposite to the Liberation Pavilion. It is one of the four largest spring groups in Jinan together with Baotu Spring, Pearl Spring, and Five Dragon Pool. The Black Tiger Spring Group is further formed from the Agate Spring, Pipa Spring, Bean Sprouts Spring, Wave Spring and another 10 springs. The babbling springs flow into the moat, and the river, in return, replenishes the spring water. The surrounding rockery, corridors, pavilions, leafy trees and the sound of twittering birds is also a beautiful natural resort and the spot is open to the public for free all day long.
